PickupLink vs CurbSmart

The short answer

Choose PickupLink if you want the safety of named, verified check-in at the pickup line without asking every family to install an app, and you want to know the price before the demo. Choose CurbSmart if you need what it bundles beyond dismissal, or your families already use it every day.

Both products record who picked up each child. The difference is what the family has to do before that works, and what the check-in actually proves. With CurbSmart, the school decides whether parents use the app at all, and otherwise staff read placard numbers at the curb. With PickupLink a parent gets an email 15 minutes before the bell and taps a link. The tap is accepted only from inside the pickup area the school drew on a satellite map, and the teacher sees the adult's name the same second.

Ease: what families, teachers and the office actually do

For families. PickupLink asks for nothing in advance. The office adds each guardian's email; before dismissal the guardian gets a short email; on arrival they tap "I'm here". No app store, no account, no password to forget on the first day of school, and it works on any iPhone, Android phone or old handset with a browser. CurbSmart can run without parents in the software at all, which is easy for families but means the school relies on a placard rather than the adult; when the parent app is switched on, families install it and create accounts.

For teachers. A PickupLink classroom board is a web page on whatever the teacher already has: a laptop, a tablet, an interactive display. Arrivals appear at the top in order with the adult's name, the board can chime and speak the student's name, and one tap marks the student picked up. There is nothing to install and no staff app to keep signed in.

For the office. A school administrator sets PickupLink up alone in a morning: grades and dismissal times, a CSV import of students and guardians, teachers invited by email, and a box dragged on a satellite map to mark the pickup area. CurbSmart is set up with the vendor, which is fine for a district and slow for one school that wants to run tomorrow's dismissal on it. Every day after that, the office sees the whole school's board, logs a parent who arrived without a phone with "Parent here", and opens check-in early with "Dismiss now" on a weather day.

Safety: what the check-in proves

The point of dismissal software is that a child leaves only with an adult the school has approved. So the question to ask of any product is: when the classroom is told "Ava's ride is here", what does that actually prove?

With PickupLink it proves three things at once. The check-in came from a link sent only to a guardian the office marked as allowed to pick up, so it names a specific adult. It came from that adult's own phone. And the phone was inside the school's pickup area at that moment, because a tap from outside the area is refused and the page shows the parent where their phone thinks they are. The teacher sees "Linh Nguyen (mother) arrived 3:02 PM", not a family number, and the release is recorded with the teacher's name, the adult's name and the time. Attendance is taken on the same board, so a student marked absent cannot be dismissed by mistake. A check-in made without location, on a phone that could not get a fix, is allowed but flagged on the board and in the audit log so staff confirm before releasing.

With CurbSmart, the curb staff read a household placard number, or the parent checks in from the app if the school allows it. A placard proves the car has the placard. It can be borrowed, left in a shared car or copied, and it says nothing about who is behind the wheel. Neither approach is unsafe. PickupLink's is simply tied to the person, their phone and their position, with no extra step for staff and nothing for the family to carry.

Price

PickupLink publishes its price per school: $299 per year for a school with up to 300 students, $799 per year for a school with up to 1,000 students (with personalized onboarding), and unlimited parents on both. Every plan has every feature. Schools pay by credit card online or by invoice, sent 30 days after activation and due net 30, so a school that prefers an invoice has nothing to pay on day one. Parents and teachers never pay.

When CurbSmart is the better choice

• You want to keep parents out of the software entirely. CurbSmart works with staff reading placard numbers and no parent participation at all. PickupLink can run that way too with car numbers, but it is built around the parent's own check-in.
• Buses and activity release matter as much as the car line. CurbSmart manages bus loading and after-school release in the same queue. PickupLink covers car line, walk-up and after-school classrooms, not buses.
• You already run Nutri-Link products. One vendor, one support line.

When PickupLink is the better choice

• You do not want a parent app. Every family can use an emailed link; not every family will install and keep an app. PickupLink works for the grandparent with an old phone and the sitter who was added this morning.
• You want the check-in to prove the adult is there. Named guardian, own phone, inside the pickup area. The teacher releases to a name, and the record says who collected the child.
• You want dismissal, not a platform. No visitor kiosk, no messaging, no bus module to pay for or configure. One job, done in the browser.
• You want to start this week. A school administrator sets it up alone in a morning; most schools run their next dismissal on it the same day.
• You want the price before the demo. $299 per school per year, published, paid by credit card online or by invoice. No set-up fee, no per-parent charge.

Switching from CurbSmart to PickupLink

Export students and guardians from your student information system (or from CurbSmart) as a CSV and import them into PickupLink; mark which adults may pick up. Invite teachers by email. Draw the pickup area on the map. Then tell families in one message: "You will get an email before pickup; tap the link when you arrive." Nothing needs to be uninstalled on the school's side, and you can run one grade on PickupLink first while the rest of the school carries on as before.
